The Science of Sleep: 7/10
No, I did NOT go see this movie just because it stars Gael Garcia Bernal...
Who would have thought such a thing?
Anyway, ktspktsp and I went last night for the matinee showing here in Reykjavik (a steal, at about 7 bucks... regular shows are about $15), and were pleasantly surprised. The main character struggles with distinguishing between his (very colorful) dreams and real life... which becomes a real problem when he tries to hold down a job and woo the woman next door. The guy's imagination, and the way the movie captures it, is the highlight of the show. The surrealness is beautiful, even if it doesn't make a lot of sense most of the time. I liked Michael Gondry's previous film,
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but I don't think this was quite as good as that one. Worth a matinee price, though.
