National average circumference is 4.5 to 5...I'm not sure 5.5" is really getting into 'too thick' territory.
An ex of mine related that a hookup she attempted to have at one point was like trying to have sex with a doorknob, about a 3" diameter. THAT is too thick, 5.5" is on the high side of average.
I'm not saying this to try to diminish the size of your manhood, I'm just trying to say, all usual anal sex guidelines apply, you shouldn't need to take any more or less precautions than anyone else.
