"We're going to find some action and probably a little trouble this afternoon instead of classes. Wanna come?"
Aki looked at him in surprise. Miss classes? Wasn’t that why they were there? To learn? She bit her lip and let the lines her notebook blur together as she thought. Maybe no one else would want to be her friend—especially once they saw her weapon. She hadn’t done extensive research but there didn’t seem to be a division devoted to the tessen in the school’s training program. And it wasn’t exactly a front line weapon—sure it looked great in practice, but when it actually came time to use it, she couldn’t think of other people. Or maybe she just hadn’t learned how to do that yet. Just then a bumblebee lazily buzzed against the window pane and landed on the ledge. Her little feet were dusted in yellow pollen, and she took a moment to inspect a forefoot and clean her antenna. Aki looked at the bee’s big eyes, and, as if in response, the bee fanned out her wings, and then flew away. ‘Maybe it’s better to learn to work in a group’, she thought, as the bee left her sight. And she was anxious to really try out her tessen, and she could always sneak away from them and go back to class. When the teacher turned back to writing on the chalkboard, Aki slid her foot over to the boy who had made her laugh, clicked her heel against his, and when he looked over, whispered, “hai”.
