This has happened to me before too. I don't get regular periods either. I get one like every third month. Im not on BC or anything, i have just always been that way. And usually if I get the brown blood thing off and on for a few days I still get my period eventually. But I think there was a time or two that I didn't. So I was like you, just assumed it was spotting.
