I have to agree with the xbox1 and xbmc as THE solution for a media box. I thought about building a beefy media PC, but i really cant beat what xbmc offers. Never once come across something I cant stream, can stream directly from my windows shares, my offsite ftp server, or any other number of places. Everything from wmv's to qtimes, even to some old real media stuff works great.
you can put one of these together for under 200 bucks if you look around for a xbox 1 that someone is getting rid of because of DDE's, swap the drive in it, and about 70 bucks for the chip. Software is available through IRC and its a fun project even with limited know how, it isn't that hard to get up and running.
