The World Is Not Going to Hell

Somewhere at this moment, there is a kid who has found a way to have fun with a mound of dirt and his BMX bike. Meanwhile, in the park half a mile away, another kid stares perplexedly at a new-age all-plastic playground setting. There is an adult volunteer beckoning the child over, inviting him to play in this new, safe and sterile environment. "This is a better way," his mom thinks to herself as she watches from the bench.
Somewhere at this moment, there is a kid who is gazing at his computer screen with deep intensity. One hand is on his mouse while his other hand twitches reactively over his keyboard. Meanwhile, in the park half a mile away, another kid takes a drag from his friend's cigarette, feigning to have done it before until he bellows out a cough that draws chuckling from the small crowd around him.
The world is not going to hell, but we're desperately trying to get it there. And that's what keeps the Earth spinning. As humans, it is our nature to be correct. That means when someone says you're wrong, you persist. That means when someone tries to control, you resist. It is equilibrium. It is both harmony and chaos.
Case One: Oversexed heathens. I could cite thousands of years of human history to explain why civilization can rise to greatness even when it is completely enthralled by naked flesh, but that would be too easy. Instead I'd like to use my idol Alfred Kinsey as an example. Dr. Kinsey discovered that the lack of parity between what people think and what they say is a gap large enough for Roseanne Barr to fall through. The societal norm of vanilla sexual activity is a front held up by nearly EVERYONE. It's a masquerade ball with see-through masks. It's control on the outside, rebellion on the inside.
Here is some info on Kinsey's research.
Case Two: Global warming. We're killing the environment, right? We dump millions of tons of toxins into the oceans and lakes. We pump enough pollution into the environment to kill the atmosphere and draw the ire of the vengeful sun. We melt the ice and we flood the lands. We bring the wrath of the Earth; just like what the Earth used to do to itself back when it was young and insecure. "I just wanted to see if I could feel," whimpered the Earth. Yeah, tell that to all the innocent dinosaurs you just killed. The truth is that both sides of the fence have dodgy scientists singing the happy/doom song while they wait in line to cash their check. One of my personal mottoes is so: Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you read. Keep that in mind when choosing sides.
Here is an argument against the “Left” view of global warming.
Case Three: Parent trap. What's wrong with parents today, huh? They don't let their children be kids. They don't let their kids play with anything that can potentially hurt them. They flood the FCC with complaints at the sight of a nipple. They won't allow their kids to have gay teachers. They enroll them in career-preparation courses when they're 9 years old. They're stifling the youth. It's called correction and it happens when the top that is spinning in front of you starts to drift towards the edge of the table and you touch it to keep it in-bounds, only to see it shoot off and skid off the other side. It happens when you help a butterfly free itself from a spider web, only to see it flutter to the ground with ineffective wings. It's the boob-tube generation making up for the lack of care their own parents put into raising them. But there is hope. The generation of children coddled by their hyper-vigilant guardians will mellow out and start the cycle again.
Here is a page about parenting with an amusing title.
Case Four: The curse of availability. We live in a world of sound. We live in a world of light. What we can sense is our reality, and we assume it to be for everyone else. If you watched The 5th Element, did you ever consider there being civilization outside of a city in the clouds? The news tell us what is going on. The news tells us what people think. The news is available. What isn't available is the couple down the street, who voted for the candidate you didn't even know was on the ballot. What isn't available is the music that is being played on the other side of the globe that makes people writhe in its groove and cry when it crescendos. And you listen to Rascal Flatts. But that is your reality and there is nothing else.
Here is a way to get in touch with your government without the help of CNN or FOX.
Case Five: 6 billion. There are over 6 billion humans on this planet. With a little luck, there will be 7 or 8 billion in a couple hundred years' time. Some would say that is a reason to fret. Some would claim that overpopulation is what will kill us. I'm not interested in such reasoning. Why? Because the same people find China's sanctions on family building to be deplorable. Freedom, in this instance, is the enemy. The more freedom we have to breed, the sooner we will bring about our end. On the other side of the fence are the dirty Communists who just might be on to something.
Here are some fun graphs. I don't know what they mean.
My point through all of this is that no matter what you or your opposition says or does, short of caveman-basic criminal acts, life will continue. As many fingers as you can point at one problem, there are just as many pointing back at you. These problems just exist in the lack of parity and only add flavor to the world we live in. Please, celebrate the differences in the cultures and viewpoints of the world and seek to learn about as many as you can. I mean, just because you're not right about something doesn't mean you're wrong.
