While some of the neighbourhoods in the immediate area get bad press (i.e. Jane/Finch) it's never as bad as the media tends to portray it. Living in a good building will make all the difference.
If you want to actually see the lake, you will have to live a lot further south. I doubt you could see it from nearby York.

I'll chime in and say while there are some OK buildings near Jane/Finch, the majority are not good buildings - crime aside, serious roach and maintenance problems in many of those high rises.
And yeah, you'll need to be considerably south of there to see the lake. No idea what prices are like in the Annex but it is a trendy little place in the city that the "young people" do like.
