I second the Index Service. I recall something about MS Office versions contributing to the Windows search feature. If you turned off Fast Find you'd have issues.
I'm running Office XP and this is in my startup folder:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE" -b -l
Try searching the MS support site (support.microsoft.com) for some clues.
