I've been in the computer field for over 10 years and I've never seen any advantage to turning off the computer, except for power consumption.
I've seen servers that eventually have problems with components failing but I can count them on one hand. I've had situations where computers failed when I turned them off after being on for extended periods of time.
When do light bulbs burn out most often? Usually when you flick the on switch. This might be a poor generalization but I think it's applicable.
