A friend of mine found out his girlfriend had an SKS in the wrapping. Pulled it out and found it stunningly gunked up with cosmoline. Did some research to see if there was a better way to remove than the old stand-by of cloth and WD-40, we found that steam-cleaning works. So said friend hit the store and picked up one of those little table-top steam-cleaners with a wand. It took the goop off rather easily, and even got the crap out of the wood. Took very little time and made surprisingly little mess.
All we had to do was make certain to dry it well after (though steam doesn't leave much water collecting, less than you'd think), and lubricate it for protection. You knew that, of course.
