duncan tucker: "transamerica"
a very nice small film featuring a truly excellent acting job by felicity huffman as the main character, bree osborn. it is essentially a road film involving bree and his/her son, who meet for the first time a few days before bree's surgery, which would finalize the male-female transition organ-wise. funny, smart, well written and very nicely acted piece.
lisa cholodenko: "high art"
not much to say about this film. i saw it for a second time last night, more or less by mistake, and thought it flat and tedious. ally sheedy is good, as is patricia clarkson as "greta" the junkie faded actress in fassbinder films (a nice touch, somehow)...curiously, what i ended up enjoying the most were the collective reactions of the stoner crew of friends to the various moments of relationship upheaval that constituted the action of this tiresome film. well that and wondering about the music choices. so there we are.
