The candles made for sensation play are usually soy based. They burn at a much lower temperature and the melted wax serves a purpose as a warm massage oil.
I've never been badly burned by any types of wax, the most that has happened is a red spot for a couple minutes. I've been burned worse but many other things. At the same time, alot of people find normal wax candles too painful to be enjoyable so the soy based ones are a good alternative. They're also supposed to burn cleaner.
