I know what you mean. I'm not particularly turned on by leather. Well, I take that back a little, the smell is a big turn-on. But leather as a sort of BDSM symbolic thing, doesn't move me. And yes, the spatula thing is a lot of fun. Just use the kind with holes so that you get that great swishy sound. Plus it leaves red imprints of them on your cheeks afterwards.
There is a book and I can't think of the name of it right now, that has a lot of ideas for using common household items for BDSM play. Maybe someone else here knows it?
