Many moons ago, a neighbor kid broke into the house behind me. The owner shot him because he thought the screwdriver the kid was holding was a knife. Kid died.
The kid lived with his mom and stepdad, and they had constantly been arguing about discipline. His mom didn't want to face some of the shit he was into, and wouldn't let the stepdad impose any discipline at all. They wound up divorcing and selling the house.
It was very sad, and bad for everyone.
