Shaving in or after the shower with a clean face is best because your hairs are softer from hot water and washing. Also, cleaning softens the hairs; the shaving cream is mainly a lubricant.

Here are a few other thoughts for things that work for me.

- change your blade every 7-10 days at the most
- use an exfoliant like Nivia for men or the Nutrogena Razor Defense (I switched to this a few months ago and wow!!) to clean your face and exfoliate in one step
- shave with the grain on the first pass and then against on the successive passes
- go SLOW and allow the razor to do its job - don't force things
- rinse with cooler water, not hot
- use an oil free moisturizer - I use Nutrogena men's after shaving stuff? on the parts I shave and a Mary Kay face moisturizer on my forehead and under my eyes. Yes, women's stuff; they used to make one for men and stopped men's products but the female version is the same, it works and it doesn't cost $40/bottle like the store stuff that is any good

Cleaning with an exfoliant gets rid of the dead skin instead of your razor having to shave them off. It will make your blades last longer and cut hair on the first pass.
