We engaged in diplomacy with the USSR during the cold war while they were persecuting Jews.....we engage in diplomacy with China while they persecute all religious expression.
The Holocaust denial conference is a public show for Arab consumption (and a chance for David Duke to get another few minutes of "fame"). Effective diplomacy is conducted in private and is the only way to engage your enemies in a manner that may lead to mutually acceptable outcomes.
edit:
The fact is that Iran already has influence in Iraq through their long-standing support of the SCIRI and Dawa parties (the two largest Shia factions in the Iraq government).....some suggest it is greater now than the influence of the US. There is a evidently a movement within the Iraq government to "overthrow" and replace the current PM. The person leading that effort is the head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) with close ties to Iran.
We are only fooling ourselves if we think we can exclude Iran from discussions on the future of Iraq...I think it is more in our interest that they (Iran) and we (US) and all the interested parties in the Middle East be part of broad inclusive discussions rather than have Iran and the sectarian Shia majority in Iraq cut private deals on their own.
