No knock warrants are necessary in certain circumstances but there needs to be exremely convincing evidence in order for them to be allowed. I looked up this story and supposedly they acted on an anonymous tip.
It doesn't always work out for the cops,
Lewis Cauthorne shot and wounded 4 cops serving a no-knock warrant while in plain clothes. He was charged with four counts of attempted murder but the charges were dropped.
