I would say if you want smoething for self defense in the home other then a gun get something thats practical for other stuff as well. A nice sledge hammer axe baseball bat crow bar anything. If you do have to use it for some reason you will want something with a little reach to it so you dont need to get as close as you would with a knife. Other then stuff like that might want to consider a big mean dog. They are fun and clean up things you spill in the kitchen.
