I would much rather go with a ball bat than a knife. If you get in a knife fight you have to accept that you are going to get cut, possibly very badly. I would rather stand back and crunch someone than have to get close with a knife.
If you insist on a cheap edged weapon, a machete is nothing to sneer at.
