Indeed... However, if your contention is that we have done so here, I would disagree. We had a basic understanding of the terms and it was good enough to facilitate communication. Now that we are scritinizing our ideas through our words, we must now be more specific in our words' meanings...

I would dispute that you have faith that your glass of coke will fall, I would instead state that you know from experience, empirically derived, plus from the knowledge of proven scientific theorems, that in the presence of the force of gravity, and, all other things being unchanged or equal (ceteris paribus) your glass coke will continue this behaviour each time you let go of it.

Okay, this clears things up quite a bit. You'll note that this differs from other people's use of that word in this thread but that's okay. As long as I know who is using what word in what way, I can keep track of things...
By the way, by definition, science doesn't have theorems, as such. They're pretty much the realm of mathematics only and for good philosophical reasons that I can explain but would probably be better placed in Tilted Knowledge...

Your faith in the scientific method is your starting point. And useful for the paradigm of your world.
Faith in a god, does not require scientific theorems or proofs. It stands on it's own merit as being merely accepted.
the same faith operates for atheism, as there is no proof (or just as much proof as for theists) to support that there is no god. It merely takes faith to believe that there is no god.

Well, it is true that there are no scientific experiments to show that there is no God. The reason for that is because God is not a scientific theory. There are no scientific experiments to show that there is no
Flying Spaghetti Monster but I'd be surprised if you think that such a belief is reasonable or that such non-belief would constitute "faith."

Where's your question?
I got a little pissy (but only a little) because you feigned thnking (with your "hmm" remark) and then utterly mangled the meaning of a sentence. This annoyed me...

here is why:
i understood the context (none of this is rocket science, you know?)
but i found it a strange statement.
and the syllogism you run out it like most are--formally ok but not really terribly illuminating.
that's the problem with syllogisms.
i could go on to make a parallel between this choice of demonstration, the peculiar syntax of your snippy response to me, but like they used to say on "in living color" homey dont play that.
|
Really? You didn't find my explanation of how you completely misconstrued my sentence "illuminating?" Does that mean you're going to misconstrue my other and future sentences the same way?
What was strange about my statement? You could have talked about that instead of... Well, you totally misinterpreted my sentence so I guess it didn't matter what you said after that...

see?
pissy is easy peasy.
generally, though, it doesnt really get you anywhere.
i indulge it from time to time, it never seems to get me anywhere, so i relay that bit of accumulated "wisdom" to you.
|
...but did you have a reason to be pissy? At least I understood what you said! I don't indulge pissy often but, like you, I practice it from time to time and your post was very hard to resist...

i could go on, but this is not the kind of exchange i had in mind at all, and really is not that much fun.
have a lovely thread.

I can understand staying out of threads that you don't enjoy. You don't see me much in
Tilted Politics anymore, do you? If you check far enough, you'll see that I used to be quite active there but then I realized that I wasn't enjoying it so...
