Okay, but it is an example of how non-belief in a deity is not faith but simply common sense, something that I think everyone can relate to on some level.
As a side note, at least half of the world's religious people base their faith on scripture...

There are plenty of mysteries out there but none of them are cause for religion. I don't think that the answer "we don't know" constitutes faith of any kind...

Do you think this because you know a lot of atheists that say this or is it because it sounds like something an atheist might say? Personally, I doubt many atheists have given the matter much thought. Indeed, I hadn't until I read
ustwo's post, hence my response to it. I have always felt that certain individuals needed religion because life truly is hard but I never thought about why it is so popular among the masses and why its existence is largely independent of culture. There's also a highly disproportionate number of atheists in academia which probably contributed to
ustwo's condescending conclusion...
