Recording problem with cubase-

so I've disappeared for quite a while but recently I came across a problem that I can't find a solution on the net... maybe I'm not searching hard enough-

So I'm recording little tunes and such with Cubase 3.1 on my computer and it has been well and all, but suddenly from last week on whenever I record an audio track through the line-in jack Cubase will decrease the volume of the input by itself w/o any reason after around 3 seconds in and keeps the peak volume low no matter how hard I hit the keys/scream at the mic...
(I think the same prob happens when I record MIDI too actually but I'm not totally sure..)

It is really hard to describe what's up without you actually seeing what happened- but do ask me if anything 's not clear-

Hmm, and if this post should be in electronics or computers (or even music) ... erh, just feel free to move it to where it belongs-

Cheers-
