While I find that the simplest kindnesses are met with rudeness, I still do them because that is how I am. I am, however, prone to say rather loudly,'You're welcome' as they walk away without so much as a half-hearted 'Thanks'.
My son was always a gentleman, even as a 3 year old. It's amazing how someone will be sure to acknowledge when a child holds a door for them, but expect it when an adult does.
