My Dr (till she left the practice) gave me a breast exam every year and the last time I went in they told me that unless I have a family history or personal history of breast cancer that I do not need to do an exam anymore. That they are recommending it differently. They said they had too many false alarms before. Personally I'd rather have a false alarm 5 times and catch it once than not catch it at all or catch it 6 mo too late.
