The things I like to see on a guy, as a woman:
1) Good fitting jeans. I would recommend looking for jeans at your place of business, as I've always found them to have the best deals, especially if you know your size. Baggy jeans look gross, but not too tight either--jeans that FIT are important. Women want to see a man's butt.
2) Nice collared button-up shirts for nights out. These aren't something you would wear on a regular basis unless you were going out with a girl or some friends to a nice place. Otherwise you start looking like a frat boy.
3) Polo shirts. Guys always look good in polo shirts. Just make sure they aren't huge.
4) Short sleeve collared button-up shirts are also a good bet. They're more casual than the long-sleeve ones above, so you can wear them in more casual situations.
5) Pants-wise, you want to get at least 1 pair of nice-looking, trouser-cut, darker jeans. You also want a flat-front khaki trouser.
6) Undershirts are a must. Again, Costco's Kirkland shirts are good quality, good quantity, and cheap. A pack of wifebeaters is also essential, for when you don't want to show your undershirt at your collar, and for summertime.
A Dockers display at your local department store is usually a good bet as they usually have several mix and match choices right there, so you don't need to worry about trying too hard to coordinate. I'd stick with their tops as their pants tend to wear out a little fast for my tastes. My jeans recommendation? Nautica jeans, if your store is carrying them. And Old Navy is great for khakis.
And personally, as someone who has bought a lot of Old Navy/Gap/Banana Republic--while the fabric quality may be better in Banana Republic's stuff, the wearout factor is usually about the same. So go with what you want to spend on what feels good to you.
