I personally would not buy old navy. I have a few of their t-shirts I still wear weekly, but it just feels like crap (and looks not as good either).
I would go with at least Gap, or if you can afford it, Banana Republic.
The key is you don't need many clothes, you just need a few good ones in two-three colors you like.
I would not recommend Eddie Bauer, if you are in teh early 20's like me. However, since you seem pretty thick/big, Eddie Bauer has alot of big-fitting clothes, in case you can't find anything elsewhere..
Just grab 2 pairs of really really nice jeans and throw on a few vintage t-shirts or nice-quality tshirts, and you are set.
I was going to recommend designer jeans like Diesel or True religion or 7's, but since you are size 36, might be difficult.. try American Eagle?
Oh yea, the $200 for Diesel's are quite worth it if you can afford it. I haven't bought designer jeans personally, since I've been able to buy cheaper knockoffs, but if you cannot get nice knockoffs I would go with real designer jeans: if you want a nice fitted metro look.
Oh yea, since you are in the Bay, try going to some outlet malls. There is a Saks outlet @ Great America with designer jeans with big discounts. Might as well hit up the Guess store there as well. Guess F.actory Outlet is not that good quality in general, so you might want to pick a few ones that you feel are good quality since the rest won't last 2-3 washings (!)
