Here's an idea: Go to a store that appeals to you, find a rather put together sales girl and tell her what you said here and ask her help in finding some threads and good colors. Note I said girl...a guy would more than likely just show you stuff he thinks is 'cool', but a girl would probably show you things she would find attractive on a guy, which is more personal because it's the guy in question(in this case, you).
