Depending on the student, two-four months of training should give you a reasonable idea on the basics of self defense.

I've got to agree. Check nearby martial arts schools. Our Karate/Self Defense center here focuses on getting away from the attacker, and being aware. It also shows how to get out of certain holds (ie, someon grabbing your arm or shirt).
