I can tell you from experience that Goo Gone definitely works! I once spent a week cleaning old duct tape residue, both sticky and dried, off of electrical cables at a lighting rental shop.
Boy did that ever suck.
Obviously you should test it on a discrete corner of whatever surface your cleaning to check for damage, but it will do the job and doesn't smell too bad. I'd wear gloves if you're doing an extensive job.
