Life formed on Earth, which means it's possible. Even if it's very improbable, the number of stars in the universe would indicate that it's likely life formed somewhere else.
And they won't necessarilly need water to do it either. Life on earth evolved needing water because there's so much of it. A planet with 4/5ths of its surface covered in liquid methane might well spawn life that requires methane, and for whom water is a deadly poison.

Agreed. We have no idea how life exists or develops outside of our own environment, therefore anything right now has to be unfounded speculation. It's like trying to figure out advanced calculus when you've just learned addition.
