I don't believe earth is so unique that something happened here that didn't happen elsewhere in similar manner. In my mind, based simply on probablility there must be other life out there. I believe there are immense numbers of planetary systems in the universe and even if only a very small number have conditions conducive to some kind of "life", the odds are there is life out there. And I also think there are likely to be forms of life out there that can exist under conditions we don't understand yet or haven't even thought of yet. A couple problems in my mind are how far most are probably away from us, and how likely are they to be "alive" at the same moment in the existence of the universe as we happen to be around. Even the ones that might happen to be around in our time slot, unless they are in our very immediate area of our own galaxy, we'd have to discover new ways of travelling or even communicating with such far away places ...sneak thru a worm hole, time travel, that kind of thing.
