I asked a fellow forum member on a different (superhero-related) forum and he suggests;

The overall story sounds like the Contest of Champions storyline...

The first of which was a 3-part mini that occurred in 1982. It was orchestrated by the Grandmaster and Death in a game of 'scavenger hunt/combat'. Grandmaster was playing for a device to resurrect the life of his fellow Elder, the Collector. Heroes from around the world were divided up between the two as pawns to seek 4 pieces of the object which would return Collector to life. The heroes were abducted from Earth (or the earth dimension), but their conflicts took place on Earth.

The second Contest of Champions was a 5-part mini that occurred only as recently as 1999. This one more closely resembles what you are looking for as an alien race abducted many of Earth's heroes and convinced them to battle in a sense of good sportsmanship... in return for providing entertainment, the aliens promised good things for Earth (can't remember what, maybe a cure for cancer & such). The aliens were merely a ruse and the whole contest was a ploy to bring together the strongest of the heroes so that the Brood Queen --using Rogue's body and powers-- could steal the powers of Earth's mightiest champions and then be reborn through Rogue with those powers. The weaker, defeated heroes were teleported to a hunting ground with their powers neutralized... they were to be sport for lesser Brood. This one occurred in space, though their battle environments were set up to resemble Earth.

There's also the Secret Wars which occurred in 1984, heroes and villains gathered together by the omnipotent Beyonder to battle for some great prize. Dr. Doom screws things up royally... for the Beyonder. This 12-part storyline took place on a world mish-mash world thrown together by the Beyonder's power.

While all 3 storylines featured Wolverine (and many others), unfortunately none of them were crossovers between Marvel and any other companies and there was no (to the best of my recall) a hero called Junior or anything similar to that.

Then, in 1995, Grandmaster strikes again with a true crossover between Marvel and Malibu. In this case, Grandmaster battles Loki in a contest of chosen champions... the Avengers and Ultraforce. In this instance, Wolverine didn't play any part in the scenario... and it was a 2-parter.

I really can't think of any mega-comic battle royale crossover event that was limited to a single book (unless we're talking about a miniseries that went to trade paperback format)... even still, I can't think of one that perfectly fits the described scenario without more specific information to at least rule out the stories I mentioned or possibly to refresh my memory about something that's just not clicking in my head yet.

To be honest, I'd love to know what this is myself.
any help?
