I usually remove adhesives on surfaces I'm worried about damaging with a solvent by rubbing the sticky spot with something that will bulk up the adhesive (e.g. dryer lint, toilet paper, sugar, etc) and then just rubbing the spot in on itself until it forms pieces big enough to remove. It takes a while but gves good results with little chance of staining or damaging the surface.
