I think goo gone should work...but it will also certainly have an impact on the paint and the wall surface.
Probably the best way to restore the wall to like new, no duct tape residue condition would be to sand, skim spackle or plaster, and repaint the whole wall from within all cut-in points...if you care that much.
Depending on the surface...even just a really light sanding of the duct tape gunk to remove and some spot painting could work too.
I think that no matter what if you goo-gone it...it will still need sanding and painting so might as well skip it. The above suggestion about an out-of-the-way test is worth considering though.
