In my experience you:
1. Provide state of the art equipment for them to work on.
2. Do not blame them for the end users ignorance
3. Never assume that since things are going well that they must not have anything to do. If things are going well it is because they are working their butts off.
4. Caffiene
5. A weekly game time (WoW, Unreal Tournament etc.) to relieve stress.
There are plenty of more ways but the above always worked well for the IT guys and programmers I've worked with.
