I think cult movies can't be successful in their initil release. If it's a big movie the first time around, it's not a cult movie. Cult movies get loved by some small segment and then, sometimes, get broader popularity from there.
Here's more of an obscure movie than a cult movie, but I know of a number of people who love it for it's strangeness. It's called "The 5000 fingers of Dr. T." Most of it is a dream sequence from the point of view of a little boy. The sets were designed by Dr. Seuss. It's very strange, in a 1950's sort of way.
