Wil is a young surgeon whose mother disapproves of her and her relationship with a ballet dancer because it violates her sense of propriety in the insulated Chinese American culture in which they live. Things are turned on their heads when mother turns up pregnant outside of marriage, won't say who the father is, and moves in with Wil.
It hits all the standard romance cliches, the partner who works too often, disapproving parents, conflicting careers, choosing between a big promotion and love, but it hits them all well, and the acctresses are all quite convincing in their parts.
There's a very nice touch near the end that I'd never seen before. Wil discovers a letter written to her mother by the baby's father and begins reading it in voiceover. About halfway through, she hits on a clue that tells her who the man is, and from that point it's his voice we hear rading the letter, and even that is used to nice effect a few minutes later. I love it when a filmmaker finds a new way to present one of the old conventions.
