I can think of 2 tips not mentioned above:
1. Drive on the Interstate or roads that go through major cites. With more bright lights and traffic, there is more to look at at night rather than empty darkness for miles on end.
2. Drive with the passanger window down. The flow of fresh air and coolness on your body will help keep you from getting drowsy.
I have done some long overnights myself, including an Orlando to Boston straight shot (28 hours). Taking breaks every 3 hours or so is smart. You can fill up you gas tank during these breaks so it's not like a wasted break just for rest. Listening to talk radio is preferable to me over music, so the book on tape might be a good idea.
