As late as you want to get there most of the time.
But if you really just wanted to catch a few hours of sleep, I was never hesitant to pull off and take a nap at a rest stop. Just crack your windows, and lock your doors.
Plus, I hear that rest stops are the new bath houses, so ya never know!
