FF was working for over a year then one day...problems.
It might be interesting to run another program that uses Sun java to see if that works but I don't know any other programs that use it.

Your settings were still there because Firefox keeps the "profile" folder separate from the "program" folder. Check out
Firefox Help: How To Manage Profiles for more information on that.
Try deleting the Program folder and renaming the Profile folder, then reinstalling Firefox, then reinstalling Java. If that works, you can move selected items from your old Profile folder (e.g., bookmarks.html) into the new Profile.
