I would say that it's faster the way I described, although I don't have proof. The way you described requires two separate operations: multiplication and addition. The method I described is simply addition, which is what makes it a shortcut. Back when I first learned this trick in school, we went around doing flashcards, and I was able to calculate the answer in less than a second. I don't think I'd be able to do it that faster using your way, but that might just because I'm used to the other way of thinking.
