Well the thing is that no one has any idea when the magnetic field will become too weak to support life. It could be 100 years, it could be a billion. While stuff like that really needs to be researched like mad (and it really is facinating stuff!!), for us non-scientists it's just another drop in the bucket. I'm filing it next to earth-killer asteroids, quantum phenomena resulting in massive inconsistencies in the laws of physics, and people cloning.
