If it's a nice day - take the 1/9 train (they're the red trains) to South Ferry and take a ride on the staten island ferry (I think it costs about a dollar) and it will take youright past The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Roosevelt Island and you get a great view of lower manhattan...
