Ok, I guess that explains all the Cyclops references. That was confusing the hell out of me.
I found the tone to be quite a bit different. 1 and 2 were a lot lighter, closer to the Silver Age comics, while Superman Returns was a bit darker throughout, which does reflect the post-Crisis era a bit better.
