I dunno, my interpretation involved a picture of the only person I've ever seen with a hammer and tongs; a blacksmith.

Have you ever seen a blacksmith hitting a piece of metal? He HAMMERS THE SHIT outta that thing before he's done.

That's my interpretation, but I hadn't heard it either.
