It could just be my pessimistic view on the animalistic nature of mankind in general, but I believe that the mass panic, hysteria, anarchy and chaos, that would accompany with such an announcement, would preclude you from having the opportunity to say some final goodbyes and maybe do a few of the things you always wanted to and thought you had plenty of time to do.
Imagine New Orleans...multiplied a couple of thousand fold. We'll have destroyed ourselves long before the proverbial asteroid ever would.
