When he was dominating in the early days of UFC he was winning because the majority of those getting in the ring had no idea what to do with him. They were all kickers and strikers. As soon as Gracie got in close they were going to lose.
The fighters today are all on much more equal footing. They know how to strike and they know how to fight on the ground. Gracie, while still very good, just can't stand up to the punishment that these new fighters (or at least the very best of this new breed of fighters) can dish out.
That and he was over powered...

Could not have said it better myself, while I missed the fight I cannot think of any better way to put it than you did Charl. Gracie is an all time great in my eyes, but the "new breed" knows how to ground and pound now the guys are not just punchers anymore.
