No arguments on the rest of your post - but I wanted to note that no, it doesn't just take one sperm to fertilize an egg. Actually, several need to make it to the egg to help break down the "jelly coating" around the egg so that one sperm can get through that barrier and fuse with the egg. Ah, semantics.
