It's not that I don't like the names I gave them. (Even my adopted daughter, whom I didn't name.) And I do call them by their given names 90% of the time. But there's that other 10%... being silly, being sweet, cuddling, or just to tease when we're playing. They seem to like it. Things like "little bug" when cuddling my newborn infant just came naturally. And I don't actually baby talk my kids - I've always spoken to them the way I'd hope they'd learn to speak. However, holding them close and snuggling just seems to be the right time to say something like, "I love you, Stinky Face".
What makes us call anyone by a pet name? It's not just our kids, it's our lovers and sometimes friends too. My husband calls me "Dear" so much that my 3yr old thought it was my name.
