I can confirm this.

The stepdad actually quit his job when he got the Nigerian Check. He e-mailed the nigerian scammer multiple times and attempted to help him, even though my friend was warning him not to everyday. When he went to the bank after quitting his job to deposit the check, the bank contacted the FBI because they thought that he was actually trying to scam the bank (the check wasn't even printed on check paper, it was plain printer paper). At the end of the story, the family ended up jobless and out of money because they fell for a random Nigerian e-mail. I was dumbfounded when my friend told me the story.
